If you expect less than 10,000 concurrent connections this thread suggests that you should be fine with just using Nginx to proxy Comet connections: http://groups.google.com/group/liftweb/browse_thread/thread/787e5c0dd58801b9?pli=1

I’m plan to use Nginx instead of Apache on my new VPS. Do I also need HAProxy serving Comet? Or does it work ok with just Nginx?
